Latin American Wedding Customs
Latin American wedding
customs, and South American and Mexican wedding customs to be more
particular, are an interesting blend of Aztec rituals and Spanish
traditions that the settlers brought with them form overseas. Whether
you are Latin American yourself or you are just looking to have a
traditional wedding according to Latin American wedding customs, there
are several things you can do to abide by Latin American wedding rituals
and make things as authentic as possible.
Traditional Latin American weddings are normally fairly large affairs.
In this culture families are large and extended families are positively
huge in the same respect, so if you are having a traditional Latin
American wedding be sure to plan for a lot of guests.
For the most part, weddings are a largely religious affair in many Latin
American countries, and so it is important to preserve the rules of the
Catholic church or whatever other type of church is administering the
wedding ceremony. Many weddings include a full Sunday length Mass, so if
your wedding is going to be like that be sure to make that clear on the
invitation in consideration of people of other religions.
There is one tradition that has to do with 13 gold coins that the groom
gives to the bride during the ceremony. This represents his
confidence in her, as well as his trust in her thoughts and ideas which
is something rather revolutionary that people don’t always take into
consideration in marriage ceremonies. Once the bride takes the coins,
she acknowledges what her groom has presented of her, and is pledging to
take his trust and his confidence and use it. This is something that is
not always performed at Latin American weddings these days in the United
States, but they are an authentic Latin American tradition that many
weddings do still utilize.
The best part of all wedding is a wedding reception, and having a
wedding reception adherent to rational Latin American wedding
customs is a lot easier than the wedding. At Latin American style
wedding receptions is where the good part comes in, and that is the food
and the dance.
One of the staples of any traditional Latin American wedding is the fare
that is served at the reception, and Latin American weddings
provide for some of the best. Rice and beans, tortillas, tamales,
taquitos and Jamaica are served at traditional Latin American weddings
although any other type of food could be served as well. Wedding
receptions are all about dancing and drinking, so playing salsa and
flamenco music can really help to set the mood.
Having a Latin band at the wedding and wedding reception is the final
touch, as Latin American people convey the happiness of many of their
occasions through music, so having some good music for people to dance
to that is coming from a live Latin band is one of those things your
guests will talk about for years to come.
