Wedding Attendants

Who's Who on your list of Wedding Attendants

Weddings can be overwhelming to begin with; especially if you have never been to one, or even do not remember attending a wedding. If you have been lucky enough to be a part of a wedding you may remember more than others. However, one thing that tends to be confusing for everyone is what the wedding attendants’ responsibilities and duties are.

The Maid Or Matron Of Honor –

You must know what jobs to delegate to the bridesmaids. You have been chosen as their leader. You will also need to be there for the bride with emotional and logical support, as well as sometimes being a personal assistant. You will help find the perfect dress for the bride as well as the bridesmaids. You will also choose your dress, and be expected to pay for your entire ensemble. You will also be the one who lets everyone know where the couple has been registered for gifts. You will need to make arrangements for the storage of the bride’s dress after the wedding. You will be responsible for hosting a bridal shower and a bachelorette party. Take notes of all the gifts received. Keep the bridesmaids where they should be and doing what they should be doing. Hold the groom’s wedding ring. You may also be expected to sign the marriage license as a witness. You will make a toast after the best man has made his toast.

The Best Man –

The best man has responsibilities, too. You should be the groom’s personal assistant during this time of stress. Help the groom choose and rent or buy a tuxedo for the wedding. You should also help with the groomsmen’s ensembles to make sure everyone matches and looks good. You will also be expected to plan and organize the bachelor party. You will need to hold the bride’s wedding ring until it is needed during the ceremony. Keep an eye on the groomsmen and make sure that they are putting in their part. You will need to give the first toast during the reception. Get together with the other groomsmen and bridesmaids to decorate the couple’s vehicle that they’ll be driving away in.

The Groomsmen –

You will be expected to pay for your wedding attire and support the groom from the beginning of planning the wedding until the couple is off to their honeymoon. You will also need to help the best man with his duties. You may also have to perform as an usher by seating the guests as they come in – the bride’s family on the left and the groom’s family on the right.

The Bridesmaids –

As a bridesmaid you will be working with the Maid or Matron of Honor and with the bride as well. Offer your help to the Maid or Matron of Honor, as they will have a lot on their plate. You will be expected to pay for your entire ensemble so search for a beautiful bridesmaid dress, shoes and accessories with the other bridesmaids. Get together with the other bridesmaids to figure out a good gift for the bride.

The Ushers –

Ushers are usually men, but women can also take part in getting guests in their proper seats as they arrive to the wedding. Remember that the bride’s family needs to sit to the left and the groom’s family sits to the right.

Father Of The Bride –

Traditionally, the father of the bride pays for most of the cost of the wedding, which can be quite expensive. You could also be expected
to provide maps and directions, and possibly offer a toast.

Father Of The Groom –

Traditionally the father of the groom is expected to pay for some major costs of the wedding, one of which that is very important – the rehearsal dinner. You may also want to give a toast.

Very Important Extras (VIEs) –

Flower Girl/Child –

You will need to choose a flower girl between the ages of three and six. She will walk down the aisle before the bride to spread flower
petals all over the aisle. The girl will usually be carrying a cute little basket that is filled with fresh flower petals.

Juniors

These are usually adolescent aged kids who have been invited to join the wedding party, usually between the ages of nine and sixteen. The Junior Bridesmaids, Groomsmen and Ushers will take on the same duties as the older ones, but with more of a G rated theme.

Mother Of The Bride –

Usually, the bride may choose her mother as the Matron of Honor. However, attending as the mother of the bride is equally (if not more) important. You should help with the planning of the wedding, getting a guest list put together, attending pre wedding parties, and more. Consult with your daughter to find out more about what she wants out of you for her wedding.

Mother Of The Groom –

The mother of the groom can help the mother of the bride with many of her responsibilities and duties if she chooses to. You should consult with your son (or the mother of the groom) to see what exactly is expected of you.

Officiant –

Your Officiant could be a priest, minister, justice of the peace, cleric or city official that is legally able and willing to perform the marriage ceremony.

Pages –

You will need several six to nine year old girls and/or boys to help you with your wedding dress train. These little precious girls’ job is known as pages or train bearers.

Ring bearer –

The ring bearer is usually a boy, but can be a girl as well. Try to choose a ring bearer that is not too fidgety and between the ages of 4 and 8. The girl or boy will walk down the aisle with a decorative wedding pillow that holds the two fake wedding bands that are tied in the middle of the top of the pillow.

This is a brief outline of who will be attending the wedding and what their responsibilities and duties are for the wedding preparation. This is a traditional take on the duties. Remember to ask whoever assigned you what they expect from you so there are no disappointments or miscommunications.
